Well, this is one sandwich with quite the history …
History of the panini.
Like most food, the panini comes with a story. However, this story doesn’t take us as far back as one may think. Well, in a sense anyway.
After the European sandwich explosion during the 1960s, it was time to take things to the next level. It was then that modern traces of the panini sandwich could be found in Italy. The difference? The panini press. However, the press wasn’t an invention of the 60s. Instead, the credit dates back to Thomas Edison.
Yes, Thomas Edison. Known as one of the top inventors of his time, Edison created a two-sided grill. So, on top of the light bulb, phonograph, first industrial laboratory, and the earliest version of a motion picture camera, you can also add the panini press to Mr. Edison’s list.
The panini explosion.
As we mentioned, it wasn’t until the 1960s when the panini truly took hold of the world. Starting in Italy, the grilled sandwich moved to America by the mid-1970s. In 1974, the new and improved panini press was crafted in Breville, Australia. The rest is history.
